De-Risking Subsurface Reservoir Exploration

Saudi Aramco used a Cray system to create the world’s first trillion-cell petroleum reservoir simulation.

Many oil and gas companies want full-field reservoir modeling, but are constrained by their applications and the need for huge amounts of computing capacity. In an achievement that helps de-risk reservoir exploration, “Shaheen II,” a Cray® XC system at KAUST — the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology in Saudi Arabia — produced the world’s first trillion-cell reservoir simulation, providing unprecedented detail of an entire field.
